Serena Williams: Why Serena Will Suffer a Quick Exit from Australian Open 2012
Don't expect to see Serena Williams on your television too long during the Australian Open 2012, unless of course you consider highlights of her furious meltdown after an embarrassing loss.
I cheered for Serena throughout 2011. I desperately yearned for her to return to the tennis scene and dominate like I had grown accustomed to in the past. Sure, I had my reservations and I knew she would be fairly limited following her battle with illness and injury. I would never hold that against her.
Yet we've seen a different woman over the past few months. She appears more concerned with remaining a celebrity than actually being a Grand Slam champion. I pushed for her to win the US Open after her sister Venus was forced to withdraw due to illness. I thought there was no way that Serena, getting stronger by the day and seemingly more determined than at any point in her career could possibly lose the event.
Yet she did.
And she continued to string me along the rest of the year leading up to 2012. She played me for a fool and now I'm sick of it. Her claims that she doesn't love tennis, working out or essentially anything involving athleticism is a crock of you know what. I'm disgusted by her comments and complete disregard for professionalism and sport in general.
One of the many reasons I've been a Serena Williams fan through the years was due to her sheer brilliance on the court and non-stop heroics. She was a freak of nature on the women's side of the court and I loved every minute of it.
No more. She's lost my support and it'll be difficult to win it back. She certainly won't win it back on the court, because her comments are clearly a window to her soul. She's done with the sport that made her famous.
She cares more about being a celebrity and sideshow attraction. If she's lost her love for the sport, there's no reason to believe she will come out on top of her game ready to dominate the competition like we've all come to expect.
Kiss her glory days goodbye. You'll no longer have to cover your ears when you watch women's tennis, because her disgustingly poetic grunts will only be around for a couple of days.
