2012 NFL Draft: 3 Teams That Could Tempt Indy to Deal Top Pick Andrew Luck
In the 2012 NFL Draft, the Indianapolis Colts are expected to take Stanford's Andrew Luck with the No. 1 overall pick. This is fine, as Luck is a suitable prospect to address the Colts' need for a young and prosperous quarterback.
With that said, Indianapolis is not the only team needing a quarterback and it would not be surprising to see a few teams make them a proposal.
Although a trade is an option that's certainly frowned upon by Colts fans, it's not the worst idea, since it's difficult to predict how quickly a rookie quarterback will develop in the NFL. So going with a veteran who's already been through the transition from college to the pros is a feasible decision.
Here are three teams who may be able to pry Andrew Luck from Circle City this spring.
Miami Dolphins
The Dolphins have a Top 10 overall pick and a quarterback in Matt Moore who has proven he can step in and get the job done. This season, Moore threw for almost 2,500 yards in just 13 games and had 16 TDs to nine picks, a completion percentage of 60.5 and a rating of 87.1.
As you might have guessed, Moore and the Dolphins' first-round pick would be the least Indianapolis would likely accept in the deal. The Dolphins' second-round pick would make it more appealing for the Colts. The question is whether Miami wants to move forward with Moore.
Plus, with some viable free-agent receivers in DeSean Jackson and Vincent Jackson, Indy could quickly replace Reggie Wayne if they bring in a guy like Moore, who has earned more stripes, so to speak.
All this said, Brandon Marshall and Anthony Fasano are already solid targets, and Reggie Bush is proving to be a complete back. So Miami may be hesitant unless they really want Andrew Luck to coincide with a new head coach.
Kansas City Chiefs
The question for Kansas City is whether they want to continue with Kyle Orton or Matt Cassel. Orton led the Chiefs to wins over Green Bay and Denver late this season, so it would not be surprising to see K.C. stick with him.
If so, Cassel would likely want to go elsewhere; his ability to scramble could greatly benefit the Colts offense. By dealing Cassel and including their first- and (possibly) second-round picks, the Chiefs could make a better offer than the Dolphins.
Cassel is a more well-established NFL quarterback and his strong arm, combined with the ability to buy time, is worth considering. Indianapolis has a solid receiving core and needs a guy who can get them the rock rather quickly.
With a solid offensive line and a capable rushing attack, Indianapolis could make some noise with Matt Cassel leading the way. He threw for almost 3,700 yards when filling in for Tom Brady in 2008 and just over 6,000 yards combined between 2009 and 2010 as the Chiefs' starter.
Cleveland Browns
This one comes down to how badly Cleveland believes they can use Andrew Luck instead of a stud receiver or defensive player. Although it seems extremely unlikely that the Browns would attempt to trade up, if they did, they could possibly land Luck.
The Browns have two first-round picks (No. 4 and No. 22). Trading both of these away, along with either Seneca Wallace or Colt McCoy, to Indianapolis would most certainly be appealing for the Colts.
And it's not like Luck wouldn't help Cleveland. They were banged up this season and he would make the Browns' receivers much, much better. Luck's ability to scramble would help the ground game and his ability to read defenses would hold off the blitzers.
For both sides, it would be a win-win, as Colt McCoy and Seneca Wallace both have the ability to scramble and are solid quarterbacks when they're healthy and given time to throw. Plus, Indy has a better receiving corps and offensive line than Cleveland.
