Transfer News: Maxwell on His Way to PSG

FC Barcelona's website is confirming that full back Maxwell will be joining Paris-Saint Germain. The two clubs have reached a preliminary agreement, and the player is on his way to Paris to finalize the transfer. The 30-year-old Brazilian has only made 12 appearances this Liga season and was looking to be moved in order to get more playing time.

Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola stated, "Maxwell came to see us and he told us he had an offer from PSG and he would like to accept it. He wants to leave and if he reaches an agreement the club will not stand in the way."

Maxwell joined the Catalan giants in 2009 from Inter Milan. He played a total of 89 matches in his two-and-a-half years at the Camp Nou.

It was thought by many that Eric Abidal would be the player to move to PSG. Abidal has not re-signed with Barcelona, and many believed PSG would be a destination for the Frenchman.

Xoel's Commentary

I think this is the best move for both Maxwell and for Barcelona. As I mentioned in two of my previous articles, 10 Things to Expect in 2012 (where I said to expect Maxwell to leave) and Five Areas Barca Could Actually Improve In, the need for Barcelona to give their young defenders playing time was there.

This allows Andreu Fontas to move up in line and get more playing opportunities as well as perhaps open up a spot for Martin Montoya in the first team, even thought he'll be on the bench for most of the time. Look for Barcelona to shop around for a defender like Jordi Alba or Alberto Botia soon as well. Maxwell leaving doesn't change anything on Eric Abidal's future with the team.

Maxwell will benefit by getting the playing time a quality player like him deserves.
