Former Atlanta Braves Prospect Signs with Normal CornBelters

Devon TeepleJan 11, 2012

Robert Brooks, who was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in the 20th round of the 2008 draft, has signed with the independent Normal CornBelters of the Frontier League, according to pantagraph.com.

Brooks had a standout rookie season in 2008 at rookie ball when he batted .329 with a .426 OBP and 12 stolen bases. A season-ending injury wiped out 2008, and 2010 did not end well; Brooks was released after four games.

Brooks was out of organized baseball for all of 2011, but this is an opportunity to get back in the saddle.

I am unaware of why Brooks did not play in 2011 but the CornBelters saw something in the former standout. This is what independent ball is all about; second chances.

“To me, this is what independent baseball is all about,” said Normal manager Chad Parker. “He’s got all the tools. He just had some misfortunes. He wants to give it one more chance, and we’ve got the perfect opportunity for him.”

The Indy’s, as I always mention, is very good calibre baseball where ex-superstars try attain glory one more time, but it also gives some that extra opportunity—the ones that slipped through the cracks—to live out their dream before they finally hang it up, or getting that phone call that they’ve been waiting for their whole lives.

Brooks, who has played second base and shortstop, seems to have an uncanny ability to get on base with power and speed as evidenced by 15 extra base hits out of 51 total hits (seven doubles, five triples and three home runs).

At 23, Brooks is still very young in baseball years, and hopefully things work out with Normal. The coaches are excited and claim that this guy has all the tools to succeed. What that means is exciting times for, not only the team, but the fans.

All the best to Brooks and the CornBelters in 2012.
