Alabama Defeats LSU: Why Nick Saban Is the Greatest College Coach Ever

Brian JonesJun 7, 2018

It’s not surprising Alabama took down LSU to win the BCS National title, because many thought the Crimson Tide should have won the first time these two teams met earlier in the year.

But the Crimson Tide took the life out the Tigers from the start of the game and looked like a team hungry for a national title.

Credit has to go to the team for going out there and executing the gameplan. However, even more credit has to go to Nick Saban for getting his players ready for the big game and not steering away from his gameplan.

Because of that he won his third national title and many people may not think this now, but this win makes him the greatest college coach ever.

I know that is a bold statement to make, but what he has done since 2003 has been nothing short of outstanding.

2003 started all for Saban, leading LSU to a 13-1 mark and his first national title. He would then lead the Tigers to a 9-3 record in 2004 and took his talents to the Miami Dolphins for two seasons.

He then took the Alabama job in 2007. After a subpar 7-6 year, the Tide went 12-2 in 2008, 14-0 in 2009, 10-3 in 2010 and 12-1 in 2011.

His coaching style consists of having a great defense and being able to run the football.

The Crimson Tide have been outstanding on defense, leading the nation in every major category.

As for the run game, Trent Richardson, this year’s Doak Walker winner, is a good as they come in terms of strength, vision and power.

What makes Saban so good is that he demands the best out of his players each and every practice and each and every game. He knows that the Tide can’t afford to have an off game in the SEC because that could cost them a shot at the title.

So Saban gets them ready for everything and anything, and they proved that by taking down an LSU team that was clearly the No. 1 team in all of college football after defeating teams like LSU, West Virginia and Georgia in the SEC championship.

But the reason Saban is the greatest in history is that he never makes the same mistake twice. He did not have his best game against LSU when they played in the regular season, and he made sure that the Tide were more tight on defense, the special teams was sharp and Richardson was used correctly.

Look, Alabama fans will not forget about Bear Bryant. He was a good as they come and there will never be another coach like him. But after limiting the Tigers to fewer than 100 yards of offense in the BCS title game, which led to his second national title in three years, Saban is by far the best in the game today, and one could make the argument he is the greatest in college football history.
