BCS National Championship 2012: Defense and Controversy Highlight Title Game

LSU and Alabama will clash on Monday night, and a college football loving world will never be the same. 

Goliath meets Goliath in a game that one half of the nation may view as unfair by the time all is said an done. Amidst the celebration, buildup and hype lies two things that make this BCS National Championship Game different than any other. 

Defense and controversy make this game something that we may just remember for as long as we are watching title clashes. 

Field goals, punts and dumping passes to the sidelines will be the call of the day. The reason we know is that is exactly what went down in what we can consider the appetizer for Monday's clash. 

Both teams boast NFL-size players with professional talent on defense. This means a measured approach will be taken with every snap. 

As of this writing, the score is 3-0 Alabama with four minutes to go. The only thing that has become wildly apparent is that both teams will pound the ball. That is a no duh comment if I ever saw one.

There was the hope that one team would try to open things up, but no such thing will occur. 

The ball has to be taken care of and it may come at the detriment of our entertainment. We may have to settle for field goals once again as hard hits will be plentiful all game. 

Now comes the controversy portion of the BCS title game. It seems that every season we are deriding the championship game for having some sort of controversy tied to it. This year is different. 

LSU has a legitimate beef as they are tasked with beating a solid Nick Saban coached Alabama squad not once, but twice this season. 

Meanwhile, the Crimson Tide were allowed a loss and get to play for the whole crystal football on Monday. Half the nation will shrug this off because this is the system we are given after all. 

That kind of malaise does not negate that things can get very ugly if LSU loses what looks to be an extremely close game.
