2012 NFL Mock Draft: Latest Predictions After Wild Card Weekend
Look at Ndamukong Suh's face. He can't believe what he's seeing and that's the Lions' season ending thanks to New Orleans gaining over 600 yards on Saturday night.
And with the Cincinnati Bengals, Pittsburgh Steelers and Atlanta Falcons seasons all ending this past weekend as well, here's a look each losing Wild Card team in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Cincinnati Bengals: Cordy Glenn, Guard (Georgia)
1 of 4It's definitely easy to say that Bengals rookie QB Andy Dalton played a major role in Cincinnati getting thumped by the Houston Texans.
Yes, Dalton threw three interceptions, however, he also was not helped by any ground game. Cincinnati gained just 76 rushing yards on Saturday and averaged only 111.1 per game all season (rank No. 19).
For Cincinnati to have any shot at competing with Baltimore and Pittsburgh in 2012, they must improve in the trenches. Georgia guard Cordy Glenn is a solid fit as run-blocking is his specialty.
His 6'5", 348 pound frame is ideal for Cincy and Glenn's strength is what can really help. Both Benson and Scott are strong and punishing backs, so adding Glenn to a potentially explosive offense will help make them multidimensional.
In turn, it gives them an increased chance of competing with the Steelers and Ravens.
Cleveland Browns (From ATL): Vontaze Burfict, LB (Arizona State)
2 of 4Nope, not Atlanta as they traded away this pick to Cleveland last spring.
So, thanks to the Falcons dropping out early, the Browns get this pick instead and are desperately in the need of improving across the board.
With defensive lineman in Jabaal Sheard and Phil Taylor, the Browns D-line has great potential. At linebacker, D'Qwell Jackson stands out, however, they desperately need to get him a complement backer to help stop the run.
And Arizona State's Vontaze Burfict is just the guy.
Burfict was easily the best player on an underachieving Sun Devils team, but it's his toughness and attitude that can help Cleveland the most. The Browns simply are missing a guy who intimidates like James Harrison of Pittsburgh and Ray Lewis in Baltimore.
Burfict is a hard-hitter who's laterally quick, accelerates fast, plays downhill and is a solid blitzer.
In Cleveland, he can be a 4-3 backer blitzing or a 3-4 middle backer to stuff the run. Either way the Browns can't miss, as his underrated athleticism and versatility are arguably Burfict's best attributes.
Detroit Lions: Zach Brown, LB (North Carolina)
3 of 4The Detroit Lions simply need help across the board on defense.
Mainly at linebacker and in the secondary, however, with Ndamdukong Suh leading the defensive line, it's clear the Lions are working from the inside out.
So, with their first-round pick, North Carolina's Zach Brown is a good fit.
Really had a breakout year in 2011 with 5.5 sacks, 105 tackles, two forced fumbles and three picks. Brown is a true outside backer that can drop into coverage and blitz and he is quick enough to stop the outside run game.
That said, the Lions need all the help they can get as they ranked No. 22 and No. 23 against the pass and rush respectively. In addition, they allowed an average of 367 total yards per game and 550 versus the Packers in Week 17 along with 626 against the Saints in the NFC Wild Card.
They need a consistent pass-rushing backer who can also cover the intermediate routes and is fast enough to blanket slot receivers and tight ends one-on-one. Zach Brown can do it all as he has much potential and room to improve.
Pittsburgh Steelers: Zebrie Sanders, Tackle (Florida State)
4 of 4Although it was expected that Ben Roethlisberger's ankle not be 100 percent against Denver in the Wild Card, his ability to run a few times showed that maybe it didn't hurt as much.
To that end, Big Ben was still sacked fives times by the Broncos, which was the most of any playoff QB during the Wild Card round. As for the 2011 regular season, Ben was sacked 40 times in 15 games.
So, make that 45 sacks in 16 games which is almost an average of three per game. With a weaker than normal Steelers rushing attack, it's clear they need some help on the offensive line. Therefore, allow Florida State tackle Zebrie Sanders to be of help.
Zebrie's 6'5", 307 pound frame is ideal. He's laterally agile enough to make a solid pro blindside tackle and his run-blocking can help on zone schemes, as well as traps and counters. With Pittsburgh needling as much help as they can get in the trenches offensively, they can't go wrong with a guy like Sanders.
