Wide Left Podcast: Tebow, NFL Home-Field Advantage, BCS Title Preview & More

Dan LevyJan 9, 2012

Welcome to the Monday show.

Subscribe to the Wide Left podcast in iTunes here.

Finally in the new year we will be adding a show every Monday morning we're calling Five Wide, and I'm bringing back a familiar voice to my old listeners: Nick Tarnowski, the co-host of On the DL for years.

Each week we will take a look at five topics, discussing each for five minutes each (give or take), giving listeners a fast-paced show with the ability to skip through to the topics you want to hear. With that, here's a rundown of today's topics.

Top Story: Tim Tebow. Was he throwing a better spiral later in the game? Is there really something magical about this kid? How intriguing is the matchup between Tebow and the Patriots, especially considering the Pats just hired the guy who drafted Tebow in Denver? CBS has to be beaming.

Further Review: The game between the Steelers and Broncos never should have been in Denver. This is the second straight season where a team that is .500 or below wins a terrible division and gets rewarded with a home game they win against a far superior opponent. Sure, the better teams should win no matter where a game is played, but the antiquated playoff rules completely hurt the Steelers this year (and the Saints in Seattle last year), not to mention the Falcons, who lost to the Giants in a game that, under better rules, wouldn't have taken place. I wrote about this last week, so this is basically me saying, "'Told you so."

Hello...The Media: This is more "hello, social media" as we discuss Urban Meyer's decision to lock his Ohio State players out of Twitter. We also talk about this ludicrous tweet from (friend of the show) Darren Rovell:

"

"Ohio State players could learn more about life, job skills on social media than in most of their classes."

"

That's like saying coaches could learn more about play calling from Madden than getting a job with a team.

Speculation Station: Where will Jeff Fisher end up? How will the team he doesn't choose between St. Louis and Miami feel? Should the coach that losing team eventually hires dress up like Fisher in his press conference? (We know the answer to the last one.)

A Look Ahead: Dan Rubenstein and I discuss the SEC Championship, er BCS National Title game, and wonder if there is any possibility of a split national champion if LSU loses.

Here's the funny thing: I assumed the chatter about a split title was talking about Alabama or Oklahoma State, not thinking for one second that LSU could lose the national title game and still get a share of the national title. If that happens, wow. Talk about a meaningless bowl game.

Regardless, we both think LSU will win, but certainly don't put your money on our vote of confidence.

Thanks, as always, for listening.
