Falcons vs Giants: 5 Observations from Sunday's NFC Wild Card Game

Jun 7, 2018

The New York Giants and Atlanta Falcons battled it out today in an NFC Wildcard showdown Sunday, with the...

OK, scratch that, one team battled, the other team did their best impression of roadkill. A really good impression, actually.

Here's a look at five things we took away from the Giants' 24-2 lambasting of the Falcons.

1. Mike Smith Is Stuck on Fourth and Dumb

1 of 5

Atlanta Falcons head coach Mike Smith is known for being very aggressive of fourth down, including going for it twice in the first half of Sunday's game.

This is the sort of go for the throat mentality that I would really admire...if it occasionally worked.

Didn't either time today.

2. The Falcons Need Help Up Front Offensively

2 of 5

Of course, Mike Smith's gambles might have a better chance at success (like say, any) if the Atlanta Falcons offensive line could get some push up front on those short yardage plays.

The Falcons certainly didn't today, as their offensive front was flat-out embarrassed by the Giants.

3. The Giants Run Game May Be Coming Together

3 of 5

The New York Giants ranked dead last in the NFL in rushing offense during the regular season, averaging only 89.2 yards per game.

However, that was with both Brandon Jacobs and Ahmad Bradshaw nursing injuries at various points throughout the season, and with both backs healthy, the Giants nearly doubled that amount today, racking up 172 yards against the Falcons.

4. The Giants Can Cruise Without Cruz

4 of 5

New York wide receiver Victor Cruz was one of the breakout stars of 2011, but the second-year pro was held in check Sunday by Atlanta, managing only two receptions for 28 yards.

However, fellow wideout Hakeem Nicks showed what can happen when teams focus their attention on Cruz, erupting for 115 yards and two scores on six catches in the Giants' blowout win.

5. The G-Men Have a Real Shot Against Green Bay

5 of 5

This one we already sort of knew, as the Giants gave the Green Bay Packers all they could handle back in Week 13 before eventually falling to the Pack 38-35.

However, the Giants' dominant performance today just reiterated that when firing on all cylinders, New York can hang with anyone, so the Packers will likely have their hands full at Lambeau Field next week.
