Jerry Sandusky Scandal: Former Penn State Coach Has Been Own Worst Enemy

Josh MartinJun 7, 2018

If there's anything we've learned about Jerry Sandusky amidst the unfolding of the child sex abuse scandal at Penn State, other than that he's allegedly a monster who used his station to rape young boys, it's that the guy can't seem to get out of his own way.

Sandusky's impromptu phone interview with Bob Costas on national TV didn't help his situation at all. Neither did his lengthy on-camera conversation with a reporter from the New York Times.

And now, it appears as though Sandusky's own handiwork may have played a prominent part in the investigation that ultimately led to his arrest. According to the Harrisburg Patriot-News, police used Sandusky's autobiography, sickeningly titled Touched, to find four of the coach's victims. The investigators were first tipped off about the book in 2009 on a tip from the mother of "Victim 6".

This after police stumbled across a 1998 police report containing an account of one victim's forced showers with Sandusky. It was that boy's mother who led police to the book.

Aside from raising further questions about why the investigation took so long and why so few resources were devoted to carrying it out in the first place, this latest revelation serves as just another example of karma has come home to roost in Happy Valley.

In essence, Sandusky authored much of his own arrest warrant...and then put it on sale at Penn State. As a result, Joe Paterno is out, Bill O'Brien is in and the Nittany Lions family remains in an uproar over both Sandusky and the new football hire.

Thanks to the criminally lethargic pace of the court system, it could years before justice is finally served in this case. If anything, the emergence of Sandusky's autobiography illustrates the degree to which the Sandusky scandal has been mishandled at nearly every level, from Paterno and the folks in charge at Penn State to local and state authorities.

Sandusky's autobiography was hidden in plain sight, and yet, those charged with uncovering the truth needed a lucky break to find it.

If the handling of this whole matter thus far is any indication, there will be plenty more embarrassing and disgusting details to emerge from the Sandusky maelstrom, morally (and perhaps legally) indicting people other than those directly responsible for the crimes in question.
