2012 NFL Draft Order: Robert Griffin III and Overrated Players Sure to Be Busts

Alex KayJun 7, 2018

Every single year, a number of players are reached for in the first round of the draft and never pan out in the NFL.

It will be no different in the 2012 NFL Draft, just as it has been no difference since the draft started back in 1936 and will be no different up until the final draft class in this league comes through.

However, certain teams are much better than others at selecting players that have a high chance of panning out with their top picks, rather than wasting them on guys who have some upside and a small body of actual work on the football field.

Here are a few players who teams need to be extremely cautious of and certainly have a potential bust tag looming over their heads.

Robert Griffin III

RGIII won the Heisman and led Baylor to a solid 9-3 season in the tough Big 12 conference, but he isn’t the second coming of Cam Newton that many people believe he will be.

Griffin is much smaller in stature, weighing less and measuring a few inches shorter.

He also wasn’t a consistent winner in college. He strung together two decent seasons but didn’t make a BCS bowl in either of them. Newton was undefeated and won a national championship during his year at Auburn and even won a Juco national championship when he attended Blinn Junior College.

Teams need to be wary of reaching for a guy who isn’t a proven winner and had just two decent but not eye-popping amazing seasons at the QB position.

Alshon Jeffery

This big wide receiver has yet to prove he can take over games on a consistent basis like he should be able to.

He’s been as inconsistent as they come, but that won’t stop a team from reaching on him because of his potential.

It would be crazy to see him go over a productive and proven WR like Oklahoma State’s Justin Blackmon, but it would not be surprising given his “upside."
