Manchester United vs. Manchester City: Man Utd Proves They Are Major EPL Threat

Justin WeltonJun 7, 2018

We know that Manchester United and Sir Alex Ferguson are going to compete at a high level every year in the English Premier League. Things haven’t gone as smoothly as you would think at Old Trafford, but they aren’t done yet.

Defeating Manchester City on Sunday in the FA Cup 3-2 gives them great confidence heading into the stretch run in the EPL. Their victory proves that they are the only major threat to City for the top spot.

Wayne Rooney came up large once again in a big-game situation scoring two goals in the first half. His second goal, third for the Red Devils, turned out to be the game-winner.

Manchester United are only three points off the mark for first in the table. The next closest to City is Tottenham, and while I like Spurs to be a top-four team, I don’t think they’re ready to take over the entire league.

That leaves two teams battling it out for the top spot in the EPL.

I still believe Manchester City has enough pieces to the puzzle to win the Premier League given their talent level with Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko, Mario Balotelli, David Silva, Yaya Toure and many more.

Aguero has been top class this year scoring 14 Premier League goals. Dzeko is second on the team with 10. This is still their league to win, and anything short of winning it would be a colossal collapse. I am still picking them as winners of the league.

But nobody should count out Manchester United. They have arguably the best coach in the world with Sir Alex Ferguson, some of the best players in the world and they have that championship mindset that City lacks.

How is City going to handle the pressure of being leaders later in the campaign? Will it be too much to overcome? It’s going to be interesting to see how they handle it because one slip-up could cost them the No. 1 spot.

City still has this league in their pocket, but Manchester United might be feeling confident heading into the rest of the campaign after their victory on Sunday despite playing against 10 men for 80 minutes of the game.

City’s defeat was their first loss at home since December 2010. I don’t care how the Red Devils won, this victory should give them great confidence going forward.
