Gunther Beats Jey Uso to Retain WWE World Heavyweight Title at SNME

Mike ChiariJan 25, 2025

Gunther defeated Jey Uso on Saturday Night's Main Event to retain the World Heavyweight Championship.

In a battle of brawn versus high-flying agility, Uso absorbed plenty of heavy blows while dishing them back at Gunther.

However, the 6'4" powerhouse proved too much for Uso, who succumbed to two consecutive powerbombs before falling via pinfall.

Uso and Gunther did battle once last year over the Intercontinental Championship, and Gunther came out on top, but the stakes were even higher for their clash on Saturday.

A few weeks ago, Gunther cut a promo and expressed his belief that nothing anyone did on Raw's debut episode on Netflix really mattered since everyone's focus should solely be on trying to beat him for the world title.

That brought Uso to the ring, and he immediately made it clear that he wanted to take the world title from the Ring General.

Uso noted that since he had moved past family business, which included the original Bloodline beating the new Bloodline in WarGames and Roman Reigns beating Solo Sikoa to regain his title as Tribal Chief, he was ready to move on to the next stage of his career.

While Jey had a brief, month-long reign as intercontinental champion last year, he entered Saturday in search of his first-ever world title, and he expressed his belief that he was ready to get to that level.

However, as Gunther so often does, he dismissed Jey's chances of beating him and suggested that he was not cut out for world championship contention.

Gunther vowed to prove that Jey is nothing more than a good tag team wrestler, and he left it up to Jey if he wanted to risk the embarrassment of losing on the big stage.

Never one to back down from a challenge, Jey accepted, which set up arguably the biggest match of his career at Saturday Night's Main Event.

While Jey fought valiantly, he ultimately fell short against Gunther, leaving his path to WrestleMania 41 in a state of uncertainty.
