Gervonta Davis: Mike Tyson 'Tarnished' His Legacy in Jake Paul Fight 'for Some Money'

Joseph ZuckerDec 5, 2024

WBA lightweight champion Gervonta Davis thought Mike Tyson lost in more ways than one in his highly anticipated fight with Jake Paul.

Davis responded affirmatively when asked whether Tyson's performance against Paul "tarnished" his legacy in the ring. He added that the legendary heavyweight competed "for some money."

Davis' ire hasn't been reserved for just Tyson's camp. He called Paul "a whole bozo" for putting the whole thing together.

Nobody expected to see prime Iron Mike step between the ropes in November, but he looked pretty good in training for a 58-year-old. He seemingly had enough punching power to inflict some pain on the much younger Paul.

Instead, Tyson connected with just 18 total punches across the eight rounds. He mounted so little offense that Most Valuable Promotions issued a statement refuting the notion the fight was rigged.

As it relates to Tyson' wider career, though, it's hard to "tarnish" a legacy that was already damaged to begin with.

There was the shocking upset to Buster Douglas in 1990. Evander Holyfield beat him by TKO in 1996 and then Tyson infamously was disqualified in the rematch when he bit a chunk off Holyfield's ear. He was also thoroughly outclassed by Lennox Lewis in their long-awaited meeting in 2002.

And that's just the boxing portion.

Tyson was convicted of rape in 1992, and he was allegedly physically abusive toward ex-wife Robin Givens.

To the extent it warrants any mention at all, the Paul fight will be a footnote in Tyson's life and times.
