15 Cheesy, Funny and Awesome Football Adverts
There comes a time in a footballer's life when the financial benefits of appearing in a TV advert are a little too appealing.
Sometimes the adverts can be cool and impressive, whereas others can just be downright embarrassing to watch.
I've collected together a selection of embarrassing, funny and cool ones for your viewing pleasure, although I know there's loads more out there. If you've got one you think is funnier/cooler/more cringe-worthy than any of these, pop a link in the comments section.
Manchester United Kit Manager Gets Shirty
1 of 15Year: 2008
Footballers: Rio Ferdinand, Cristiano Ronaldo and Albert Morgan (Manchester United's Kit Manager)
In this Nike Under Armour advert, the United kit manager Albert Morgan stakes his claim for a first-team place—let's face it, he can't be a lot worse than Jonny Evans, can he?
United 1, Real Madrid 0
2 of 15Year: 2010
Footballer: Roberto Carlos
This Pepsi advert may offer a reason as to why Real Madrid's injury crisis was getting steadily worse.
Jim'll Rinse It
3 of 15Year: 2010
Footballer: Jimmy Bullard
Wash and Go wanted to recreate their 1980s ad for their 21st anniversary, and who better to star in it than Jimmy Bullard and his flowing locks?
As you can guess, he put his own Jimmy Bullard stamp on it.
Carl-Toon Network
4 of 15Year: 2007
Footballer: Carlos Tevez
In this Cartoon Network advert, it appears Carlos Tevez is given the opportunity to bust his best moves for 30 seconds.
I daren't even imagine how much that 30 seconds cost.
Pedersen Riises to the Challenge of Promoting Fruit to Youngsters
5 of 15Year: 2010
Footballers: Morten Gamst Pedersen, John Arne Riise and Erik Hucklesepp
Scandinavian fruit company Bama got the above three stars in to promote eating fruit instead of sweets.
Not an easy task in itself, but I'm sure that this catchy tune will persuade children otherwise.
Pedersen said the following about the video:
"This is a commercial I, John Arne and Erik did for Bama to promote fruit. It was really fun to make, especially since the store was full of customers who could see us make a fool of ourselves. But it is for a good cause and that’s alright.
"
The Sky Is the Limit for Romance in Italy
6 of 15Year: 2003
Footballers: Filippo Inzaghi, Pavel Nedved, Vincenzo Montella, Francesco Toldo and Pierluigi Collina
This advert for Sky TV in Italy showcased some of the biggest stars in Serie A giving a little back to the supporters.
Maybe a little too much.
H'Angus Wins the 'Pools
7 of 15Year: 2011
Footballers: H'Angus the Monkey (Hartlepool's Mascot)
NPower League One side Hartlepool United were looking for a way to sell more season tickets and increase their fanbase at games.
A price cut and this cheeky advert (poking fun at one of the most annoying adverts in British history) later and they had sold 5,300—2,300 more than their average attendance for the previous season.
I'd like to say that this is a cringe-worthy advert, but there's something about it which makes me extremely happy when I watch it.
£50 Million. Because You're Worth It?
8 of 15Year: 2009
Footballer: Fernando Torres
Possibly one of the most cringe-tastic videos in this slideshow sees Fernando Torres promoting a hairdresser in his native Spain.
The staff in the video look like they feel pretty awkward being there, and there are times like 0:11 where our 'Nando seems like he's forgotten he's in an advert—but fear not, he brushes it off with a cheesy grin.
Apparently the salon owner is a friend of his, and he was just helping them out. Well, hopefully he'll be keeping clear of the advertising scene.
'Nando in the Doghouse
9 of 15Year: 2009
Footballer: Fernando Torres
Oh dear, he's at it again.
Yes, just a month later, 'Nando helped out another friend by advertising his dog training school.
Highlights of the video include a dog running around with football boots around his neck and Torres kicking a ball at a dog with a Gerrard Liverpool shirt on. Classy.
Venky's Blackburn't Chicken
10 of 15Year: 2011
Footballers: David Dunn, Jason Roberts, Ryan Nelsen and the rest of the Blackburn Team.
To announce the new partnership between Blackburn and Venky's, Venkatesh and Balaji Rao thought that it would be best to make an advert to promote that fact.
The result is cringe-worthy.
Marek Hamsik: Hair to Stay?
11 of 15Year: 2009
Footballers: Marek Hamsik, Fabrizio Miccoli, Mauro Zarate and other stars of Serie A
This advert was part of a series advertising Sky Sports in Italy.
The adverts involved the stars of Serie A doing regular jobs at the TV studio, including being a receptionist, using the photocopier and of course working in the hair and makeup department.
Rock, Pepsi, Scissors
12 of 15Year: 1999
Footballers: David Beckham, Dwight Yorke, Filipo Inzaghi and Edgar Davids
This Pepsi advert demonstrates the disadvantages of sharing the wealth with your fellow man.
Failing that, why you should go for rock in important situations.
Ro-Bow-to Carlos
13 of 15Year: 2002
Footballer: Roberto Carlos
Another Pepsi advert, this one was made for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, in which Roberto Carlos shows the benefits of learning the local customs.
Maybe this is how Ronaldinho lobbed David Seaman from the halfway line? Maybe not.
Scotland's Going to the World Cup!
14 of 15Year: 2002
Footballer: Jason Scotland
If this is the first time that you've seen this advert then I'm sure you'll agree that it's excellent.
Although the Scottish won't appreciate the fun being poked at their inability to qualify for major tournaments, I'm sure that they can at least offer a wry grin for Irn Bru's efforts.
Check out the other advert in this series here.
Ney-oncé?
15 of 15Year: 2010
Footballers: Neymar, Robinho and Ganso
Is this the future of Brazilian football or a dance craze that could be hitting a club near you?
This is meant to be an advert for a frozen chicken company, which begs the question why Blackburn couldn't do something similar.
Mind you, I'm not sure the likes of David Dunn and Ryan Nelsen have the same ball-juggling skills.
