2012 NFL Draft Order: Which Teams Have Best Shots at Top WRs?
The two biggest questions in this year's NFL draft may become "Will the Colts sign Andrew Luck before his name is called at the podium?" and "Who will get in on the Robert Griffin III Sweepstakes?"
This year's draft has become one about the passer, and the two who figure to join last year's draft class as the new breed of NFL quarterback (sorry, Blaine Gabbert).
Maybe this should also be the year of the receiver in the NFL draft. While there is one pass catcher who has separated himself from the rest of the field, there are others who are definite first-round talents and will be snatched up by teams who need a home-run threat or someone to make the tough catch across the middle.
Teams who get desperate enough may look to make a deal to trade up or back into the first round to get the one player who they think will have the best chance of becoming a top playmaker.
These teams are in need of a receiver or offensive firepower and have the best shot at landing one of the top receivers in the draft.
Jacksonville Jaguars
1 of 5No team needs receivers more than the Jaguars, who have what likes a pedestrian corps right now.
With the seventh selection, it makes for a difficult read as to what they will do. Justin Blackmon will be gone by the third pick. The question then becomes whether Michael Floyd is worthy of that high a selection or does the team still think Alshon Jeffery is a Top-10 talent?
Watch and wait. Also, the free agent market could help them and that would allow Gene Smith and his scouts to maybe look to the second round (Kendall Wright of Baylor or Mohammed Sanu of Rutgers) to select someone with the right skills to help Blaine Gabbert.
Chicago Bears
2 of 5Each year, this team goes into the season with average-looking receivers. Do they pull the trigger on a pass catcher in the first round?
The Bears have the 19th selection in the draft. They may be able to snare Mohammad Sanu or Kendall Wright, or maybe Alshon Jeffery to be their primary target in the passing game.
Having a healthy Jay Cutler will help in making the passing offense a more productive unit, and we shall see what happens in Mike Tice's offensive scheme since he was just named the new coordinator for the Bears.
St. Louis Rams
3 of 5A team that dealt with injuries all season.
Let's see what a healthy Sam Bradford and a good set of receivers do for this team. Brandon Lloyd was traded for at the deadline and did not distinguish himself as anything elite. And with the second pick in this year's draft, Justin Blackmon is there for taking.
Bradford and Rams running back Steven Jackson must be salivating over having a talent like Blackmon spreading the defense.
Washington Redskins
4 of 5While Robert Griffin III maybe the guy this team will target in the draft, they may not get him with the sixth pick.
The Redskins were a MASH unit on offense this season, but that does not take away from the fact that the passing game struggled. While the defense was good under coordinator Jim Haslett, the offense needs an infusion of speed.
Let's face it, Jabar Gaffney doesn't scare may defensive backs.
Do the Redskins trade up to nab Blackmon? Daniel Snyder is the type of guy to gamble with players. They could also trade down to look at Michael Floyd or Alshon Jeffrey. Whoever they draft, if it is a receiver, you have to figure the team will have a new man behind center in 2012.
Minnesota Vikings
5 of 5They have a quarterback to build the future around in Christian Ponder. They need to get Joe Webb inserted somewhere in this team's offense. They also have one of the best runners in the game if his knee holds up after offseason surgery.
The Vikings now need more weapons on the outside and at the third slot in the draft this year, it becomes a "wait and see" game.
What happens right before them will make their entire draft. While they could use a tackle and Ryan Kalil figures to be available in that slot (No. 3 overall), if the Rams decide to take the big lineman, Vikings brass would be handed a late Christmas present.
Blackmon and Percy Harvin on the outside with Ponder passing the ball is scary and could be the start of something big like is being done in Cincinnati with Andy Dalton and AJ Green.
