Cowboys' Jerry Jones Not Interested in Firing Mike McCarthy Amid 3-6 Record

Despite the Dallas Cowboys suffering a 34-6 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, team owner Jerry Jones isn't considering a coaching change.

Jones told reporters after the game that he has "no interest" in firing head coach Mike McCarthy, via Jon Machota of The Athletic.

"Mike is a heck of a coach, a great coach in my mind," Jones said, per The Athletic's Jenna West, Jon Machota, and Saad Yousuf. "(He) has and should have the opportunity to do better than we're playing right now. I haven't had good experience changing coaches in the middle of the season."

Sunday's defeat marked the fourth consecutive loss for Dallas, as the team remains at No. 3 in the NFC East with a 3-6 record.

While it's worth noting that three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Dak Prescott didn't suit up against the Eagles as he's set to undergo season-ending surgery on his hamstring, the Cowboys still suffered losses in his last three games under center.

Cooper Rush opened Sunday's matchup for Dallas, completing 56.5 percent of his throws for 45 yards before he was benched in the fourth quarter. Trey Lance replaced Rush, passing for 21 yards and getting picked off.

Under McCarthy, the Cowboys' offense had already taken a step back in 2024 prior to Prescott's injury. After averaging a league-leading 29.9 points per game in 2023, Dallas ranked No. 18 among all NFL teams with a scoring average of 21.4 points per game entering Sunday's action.

The Cowboys have now lost by at least 25 points on five separate occasions at home with McCarthy, the most among any head coach to serve under Jones (h/t Josh Dubow of the Associated Press).

McCarthy has operated as the Cowboys' coach since the 2020 season. Dallas reached 12 wins in each of the previous three years, but it's becoming increasingly likely that the streak will be broken in 2024.

Still, Jones has continued to publicly support McCarthy.

"I'm good with Mike," Jones said on Monday, per Machota. "I know how hard he works. I like his football mind. I know how good he works. He's got, in my mind, an outstanding coaching record."

While McCarthy's long-term job security is uncertain, Jones doesn't appear to be interested in a change before the end of the regular season.
