January Transfer Window: 5 Manchester United Rumours from This Week

Rikki SollisJun 7, 2018

The January transfer window has been open for a week now, so let's take a moment to recap some of Man United's transfer rumours from this past week.

Last week's edition looked at the rumours surrounding four midfield talents, including Luka Modric, Isaac Cuenca, Rasmus Elm and Ricardo Montolivo.

So what's the gossip this week? Let's take a look.

**********

If you have a moment spare then take a look at some of my other articles from this week:

Frank Lampard

Let's kick off with one of this week's most surprising rumours, which linked Man United to Chelsea midfielder Frank Lampard.

Lampard is reportedly unhappy with his relationship with manager Andres Villas-Boas, and for this reason is seeking a move away from Stamford Bridge.

However, how much truth is in these stories? In response to the rumours, Sir Alex said the following to manutd.com:

"

There’s no foundation to that story simply because Chelsea are like us, they want to do something. The second half of the season is going to be important to them. If they want to try and win the league, they’re going to have all their best players. That’s the name of the game. What can you get in January? I say this all the time. The players we would like we won’t get. So what do you do? Do you take a second-rate player? No, of course you don’t. I think obviously the injury situation has accelerated a lot of our fans into saying ‘Why don’t you get someone?’ But I’d rather stick with the ones I’ve got rather than get someone in who’ll end up not getting a game anyway because they’re not good enough.

Alan Dzagoev

GiveMeFootball.com, amongst others, has reported this week that SAF could be interested in making a move for CSKA Moscow's Alan Dzagoev.

Dzagoev has been nicknamed the "Russian Messi," possibly due to his looks as well as his talents on the football field.

Dzagoev's contract expires in the summer, so United could be able to get him for a very reasonable price, but Sir Alex's dislike of the January window could lead to a tug-of-war in July when the player is available for free.

At 21, Dzagoev is an excellent prospect for the future. Couple this with his potentially low transfer fee, then you'd have to think that he would be an excellent piece of business for the club.

Gary Cahill

3 of 5

The Metro reports that Gary Cahill could be willing to see his season out at Bolton in order to join United or Tottenham in the summer.

Chelsea are reportedly offering him around £70,000 a week, which apparently falls short of his demands which could tempt him to move elsewhere.

Despite the player being available for free in the summer, any more injuries to United's back line could prompt SAF to make a move for a defender, and Cahill's £7 million price tag could be very tempting.

Eden Hazard

4 of 5

According to sportsvibe.co.uk, Man United could be the first team to make an official offer for Eden Hazard.

The Belgian youngster has been at the centre of much transfer speculation in the past couple of months, being linked to EPL clubs like Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and United's close rivals City.

This rumour also mentions that SAF could let Hazard finish his season at Lille before joining up with the United squad in the summer, but of course the offer would have to be accepted in January to beat away the other interest.

The sum suggested in this articcle is said to be around £25 million. However, Lille have previously set an asking price of £40 million.

Paul Scholes?!

5 of 5

The Sun reported today that Paul Scholes could come out of retirement in order to help out Fergie amidst his injury crisis.

SAF has not made a formal approach for him, but Scholes has apparently said that he would be willing to help out should Fergie ask him.

Scholes still trains every day with the reserve team, so fitness would not be an issue, but will he still be as sharp as he ever was?
