NHL Style Rankings: The Best Halloween Costumes from Around the League

Nov 1, 2024

Happy day after Halloween, folks. Now that scary season has come and gone, we've been treated to plenty of NHL players' costumes from across the league.

One thing about NHL players? They may dress generally boring daily, but a decent amount of them each year gives us personality and effort with their Halloween costumes (thanks, wives and girlfriends?). This season has been no different, with a wide range of funny, ambitious, well-executed and self-deprecating costumes highlighting the 2024-25 roundup.

For the first style rankings of the season, let's take a look at the 10 best Halloween costumes.

10. The Los Angeles Kings as NWA

Quinton Byfield and Brandt Clarke.

Gotta love a regional nod to legends, and some of the Kings players nailed this NWA group costume. Brandt Clarke dressing up as controversial manager Jerry Heller takes the cake for "good sport of the year" award, and genuinely cracks me up every time I see it.

9. Jakub Lauko as Witch King of Angmar

2 of 10

If you don't follow Jakub Lauko on X, you should. If you do, you'll notice he is almost constantly tweeting about Lord of The Rings. Halloween can be so many different things to so many people: A chance to play with makeup, a creative outlet, a way to make yourself and your friends laugh. For Lauko this year, it was an opportunity to pay homage to his favorite movie and express his fandom.

8 (Tie). Spencer Carbery and Morgan Rielly as Beetlejuice

OK, clearly Morgan Rielly and Tessa Virtue (bottom photo) blew Spencer Carbery out of the water if we're going pound-for-pound based on costume execution alone. But you rarely see coaches getting into the Halloween holiday spirit, and Virtue has had years of costume experience as a professional figure skater, so I wanted to give Carbery credit for putting some effort into his Beetlejuice getup.

Rielly's hair is just fantastic, and he's giving us his best shell-shocked look.

7. Nikita Zadorov's Family as the Addams Family

Here's another reminder that you don't need to go out and buy some elaborate costume to nail the execution of the vibe. Using facial hair as a prop is an easy and free way to add some realism to costumes that more men should take advantage of.

Plus, at this point in the style rankings, we're well-versed in Zadorov's regular wardrobe enough to know that he has at least 400 vests just like this. This is a classy, effortlessly chic take on the Addams Family, and I'd expect nothing less from the Zadorovs.

6. Matt Rempe and Jonathan Quick as 'Elf' Characters

5 of 10

Lovable teenaged giant Matt Rempe could've been anything for Halloween, and he chose to be Buddy the Elf, with Jonathan Quick as Papa Elf. The funniest part? Rempe is living with the Quick family while establishing himself in the NHL, and you'll remember Papa Elf was Buddy's adoptive father.

5. Nick Foligno as Frankenstein

6 of 10

OK, we get it: Nick Foligno is actually Frankenstein's monster, and his wife is the Bride of Frankenstein. This is one of those costumes that's so much better as a duo, and these two knocked it out of the park. The Bride wig is glorious, as is the monster's forehead. I love the detail of the hair on Foligno's hand, too. Nothing like putting some effort into a Halloween classic!

4. Charlie McAvoy as Cindy Lou Who

Come on. There's nothing much to say here other than a well-done gender reversal—especially when the woman is pregnant—will never not crack me up. I can't wait until the future child McAvoy is old enough to understand this costume. The McAvoys are the funniest parents-to-be of the year.

3. Arber Xhekaj as a Costco Employee

8 of 10

The cardinal rule of Halloween: If you want to be funny, poke fun at yourself.

Canadiens' up-and-comer Arber Xhekaj has never been shy about his humble beginnings working at Costco while trying to make it to the NHL. It looks like he dug through the bowels of his closet to find his old Costco vest for this year's Habs Halloween bash, which is equal parts hilarious and heartwarming.

Never forget your roots, never forget what you were willing to do to chase your dreams and never pass up the opportunity to laugh at yourself along the way.

2. Marc-Andre Fleury as McLovin

9 of 10
TAMPA, FL - OCTOBER 24: Goalie Marc-Andre Fleury #29 of the Minnesota Wild skates against the Tampa Bay Lightning during the second period at Amalie Arena on October 24, 2024 in Tampa, Florida. (Photo by Mark LoMoglio/NHLI via Getty Images)

As you'd expect, Marc-Andre Fleury has had some Halloween costume bangers over the course of his career. The costume he chose for his last NHL season is one of the best: McLovin' from Superbad.

Sometimes, the key to a good Halloween costume is knowing yourself. Fleury's already got the perfect little grin for the occasion, the glasses were a nice touch and the hair sealed the deal. This one's a great example of not needing some elaborate costume or makeup, but leaning into poking fun at yourself and adding a few details.

1. Pierre-Olivier and Mathieu Joseph as White Chicks

Mathieu and Pierre-Oliver Joseph had the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever, and they actually did it. The brothers, who became teammates on the St. Louis Blues this year, teamed up for a spectacular take on the 2004 comedy White Chicks.

Everything about this costume is a 10/10: The idea, the execution, the commitment to the bit. The wigs are fantastic, the contour is snatching, the FBI badge shows pictures of the actual brothers. They even crashed the wives and girlfriends' group photo and blended in quite well.
