Davante Adams Trade Rumors: Raiders May Wait Until Week 7 to Deal WR amid Jets Buzz

Doric SamOct 9, 2024

While many expected Las Vegas Raiders star receiver Davante Adams to be traded quickly after the team made it known that he was available last Friday, it sounds like he will have to wait until at least Week 7 to find his new home.

ESPN's Adam Schefter reported during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show on Wednesday that while teams like the New York Jets remain interested in pursuing Adams, the fact that a trade has yet to be completed means any deal likely "is gonna wait another week now."

Schefter explained that history in the NFL showed that in-season trades typically are completed early in the week before preparations for an upcoming game commence.

"In the NFL, most every big move transactionally, if it's a trade, is going to occur Monday and Tuesday while teams are coming up with their game plans and getting ready to be on the practice field Wednesday," Schefter said. "I think if we went back and looked at all the big trades that were made in season, very few of them are made once you get past Tuesday."

The Athletic's Dianna Russini reported on Monday that both Adams and the Raiders "want him to have a new home sometime in the next 48 hours." The Jets and New Orleans Saints were named as his preferred landing spots, while the Pittsburgh Steelers, Kansas City Chiefs and Buffalo Bills are all reportedly still exploring the possibility of acquiring him.

However, Adams' preferred destinations of New York and New Orleans are facing significant changes after the last few days. The Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh on Tuesday amid their 2-3 start. Saints quarterback Derek Carr, Adams' former teammate with the Raiders, suffered an oblique injury in Monday night's loss to the Kansas City Chiefs and is likely to miss multiple weeks.

Schefter noted that these changes could allow other teams to swoop in and win the Adams sweepstakes.

"The Jets and the Saints both have taken some hits in the last week here that you wouldn't have imagined, and I do think that that's opened the window for some other teams to just kind of sniff around and see what it might be and just kind of lurk on the outside in the event that things fall through with the two teams that Davante initially wanted to play for," Schefter said.
