What Was At Stake on Monday?

When the Braves and Mets faced off in a doubleheader on Monday, playoff berths were available for both teams. Because the Diamondbacks and Mets won on Sunday and the Braves lost, the Diamondbacks could only reach the postseason if either the Mets or Braves swept the doubleheader. The Diamondbacks would have been the No. 6 seed in that scenario.

But if the two teams split—which ultimately happened—the Braves and Mets were each in, with the Braves getting the No. 5 seed and the Mets No. 6.

That was tough news for the D-Backs.

As for how we got here, the Braves looked to be in major trouble on Sept. 17, when a 6-5 loss to the Cincinnati Reds dropped them to 81-70 on the year and two games back of the Mets for the final Wild Card berth. But down the stretch, Atlanta reeled off eight wins in its last 10 games, while the Mets lost three in a row before Sunday and the Diamondbacks lost five of their last seven contests.
