Rumblings about an NHL game being held at Ohio Stadium date back to Nov. 2022 when The Athletic's Aaron Portzline noted the league and Blue Jackets officials met with stadium officials.
Before the league announced the stadium would host the Stadium Series, Ohio State officials told the Columbus Dispatch in January that it needed to be winterized. The process includes adding a heat tracing system by wrapping pipes in electric cables that can be used to raise their temperature. The estimated expense to do so is about $8 million.
The NHL officially announced the Red Wings and Blue Jackets as the 2025 Stadium Series matchup on Feb. 17. The opponent was picked specifically because of the iconic college football rivalry between Michigan and Ohio State.
This marks the fifth outdoor game for the Red Wings. They have a 2-0-2 record in their previous four games held in an outdoor stadium. The Blue Jackets have never played an outdoor game in their 24-year franchise history.
Ohio Stadium can seat up to 102,780 fans. That would mark the second-highest attendance all-time for an NHL game, trailing only the 105,491 fans who attended the 2014 Winter Classic between the Toronto Maple Leafs and Red Wings at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor.
