Bengals' Cam Taylor-Britt Says Chiefs' Xavier Worthy Has 'Speed, That's About It'

Adam WellsSep 12, 2024

Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Cam Taylor-Britt didn't come away from Week 1 with a glowing review of Xavier Worthy.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday leading up to this week's game against the Kansas City Chiefs, Taylor-Britt said Worthy has "speed, that's about it" and "he can run straight" when asked what the rookie wideout brings to the offense.

Worthy didn't get a lot of looks in the season opener against the Baltimore Ravens, but he made the opportunities he did get count. The 21-year-old showed off his blazing speed with a 21-yard touchdown on a jet sweep.

Worthy scored a second touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 35-yard reception from Patrick Mahomes on a busted coverage from the Ravens. He touched the ball a total of three times for 68 yards while finding the end zone twice.

Kansas City's decision to trade up in the 2024 NFL draft to select Worthy looks like a great move after Week 1. He had as many touchdowns of at least 20 yards in one game as the entire Chiefs receiving corps did in all of 2023.

The two touchdowns didn't exactly address some of the concerns about Worthy's profile entering the league. B/R's NFL scouting department noted leading up to the draft he had a "terribly skinny frame" that led to "struggles versus press and often goes down on first contact."

Worthy ranks in the first percentile of all wide receivers at 165 pounds. He did rank in the 92nd percentile or higher in the 10-yard split (1.49 seconds), 40-yard dash (4.21 seconds), vertical jump (41 inches) and broad jump (131 inches).

Even if certain types of coverage might give Worthy problems, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid is a master of scheming up plays to maximize a player's best traits.

The jet-sweep touchdown was a perfect example of just getting Worthy in space with blockers in front to let him run in a straight line.

Taylor-Britt deserves credit for at least giving his honest opinion, but he's also setting himself up to be on the receiving end of some internet dunking if Worthy torches the Bengals.

It's also a bold move to give the Chiefs more bulletin board material going into this game after the Bengals laid an egg with a 16-10 loss to the New England Patriots in Week 1.

Cincinnati will look to avoid falling in an 0-2 hole when it takes on the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Sunday at 4:25 p.m. ET.
