It was the first time a team from Florida has ever won the Little League World Series, and the sixth straight title for the United States.
Taiwan led nearly the entire way in this one, as Hu Yen-Chun's RBI single in the top of the first inning and some fantastic pitching had the representatives from Asia-Pacific an inning away from the title.
But DJ Mieses' RBI double in the bottom of the sixth inning sent the game to extra innings, and drama ensued from there.
Little League fans on social media were stunned by Florida's resilient win after the championship game:
That ended an otherwise dominant performance from Taiwan, which outscored its opponents—Canada, Australia, Cuba, Japan, Venezuela and finally Florida—37-6 despite Sunday's loss.
But Florida's own pitching—Lathan Norton and Jacob Bibaud combined to give up just one run and five hits, striking out five—fantastic fielding and timely hitting proved to be just enough to earn the win in what was a championship game that won't soon be forgotten.
Earlier in the day, Venezuela beat Texas in the third-place game, 4-3. Texas actually beat Florida earlier in the tournament, only to lose to them in the U.S. championship matchup.
But Florida survived the loser's bracket and now will be immortalized in Williamsport lore forever.
