After a disparaging interaction with a fan during Sunday's game against the Houston Astros, Boston Red Sox outfielder Jarren Duran is facing the consequences of his actions.

The Red Sox announced Monday that Duran has been suspended for two games after he uttered an anti-gay slur toward a fan. His suspension begins immediately, and he will miss Monday's game against the Texas Rangers.

Duran released a statement after Sunday's game apologizing for what he said.

"During tonight's game I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan," he said.

"I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person."

The Red Sox also released a statement on Sunday addressing the situation.

"We echo Jarren's apology to our fans, especially to the LGBTQ community," the team said. "We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches and staff on the importance of inclusivity."

Mass Live's Chris Cotillo reported that the audio of Duran's interaction with the fan was picked up by the NESN broadcast. After a bit of heckling from the fan between pitches during his at-bat in the sixth inning, Duran directed the slur at the person.

Duran went 0-for-3 in Sunday's game, which resulted in a 10-2 loss for the Red Sox.
