Joe TanseyJul 31, 2024

The United States picked up yet another silver medal at the 2024 Summer Olympics on Wednesday morning.

Perris Benegas earned the 12th American silver medal of the Paris Games in the women's BMX freestyle event.

The Americans have earned silver and bronze medals at a rapid pace in the first five days of competition.

The overwhelming run of gold medals has not happened yet, but the United States still resides in first place in the overall medal table.

China holds the lead in the gold-medal table, but there was one gold earned on Wednesday morning that stood out the most.

Guatemala won its first-ever Olympics gold medal thanks to Adriana Ruano's performance in the women's trap shooting event.

Perris Benegas captured the silver medal in the women's BMX freestyle on Wednesday morning.

The silver medal moved the United States' leading medal tally up to 27 and it was the 12th second-place finish at the Paris Games for Team USA.

Benegas produced a 90.70 score in her second run of the eight-woman final to earn her second-place finish.

She was 1.9 points off the gold-medal score set by China's Deng Yawen.

Benegas' silver was the third medal earned by Team USA across the cycling events. The Americans also took a silver in women's mountain biking and bronze in the women's road race.

Guatemala entered Paris with one overall Olympics medal dating back to 1952.

The Central American nation now has three overall medals and one gold, which was earned by Adriana Ruano in the women's trap shooting event on Wednesday.

Ruano set an Olympic record by hitting 45 of a possible 50 targets in her history-making victory.

Ruano's performance came one day after her fellow countryman Jean Cardenas took home the bronze in the men's trap shooting event.

Guatemala may not win any more medals in Paris, but its one gold and two overall medals will be celebrated as much as the 100-plus medals Team USA should earn.
