Danny Jansen Traded to Red Sox; Blue Jays Get Cutter Coffey, 2 More Prospects in Deal

Andrew PetersJul 27, 2024

The Boston Red Sox are adding a talented catcher.

Boston has acquired catcher Danny Jansen from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for prospects Cutter Coffey, Eddinson Paulino and Gilberto Batista, per The Athletic's Jen McCaffrey.

The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal first reported that the two teams were in discussions on a deal centered around Jansen.

Jansen, who has spent his entire seven-year career in Toronto, isn't having his best season. The catcher has a .212 average with six home runs and 18 RBI a year after he hit .228 with 17 homers and 53 RBI in 86 games.

Now suiting up for a new team, he'll look to find a spark.

Jansen fills a major need for the Red Sox, as the team was looking to add a right-handed hitter to the lineup as they prepare for the postseason. They'll now have the chance to have a lineup featuring lefty Jarren Duran, righty Jansen, lefty Tyler O'Neill and another lefty in Masataka Yoshida in succession, making things difficult for opposing pitchers.

After the trade for Jansen, Boston could still be looking to make some moves before Tuesday's deadline, as the New York Post's Jon Heyman reported Saturday that the team is hoping to add a pitcher to bolster the bullpen.

The Red Sox have had a strong season thus far, sitting in third place in the AL East at 55-47 on the year, and they'll look to continue improving with the addition of Jansen.
