MLB Trade Rumors: Mets Told Teams Pete Alonso Is Unlikely to Be Dealt Before Deadline

Doric SamJul 23, 2024

Ahead of the July 30 trade deadline, the New York Mets are reportedly rebuffing offers for one of their best players.

According to Will Sammon of The Athletic, league sources said that "the Mets have told interested teams that it's unlikely they will trade slugging first baseman Pete Alonso."

While the Mets could lose Alonso for nothing when he becomes a free agent at the end of this season, he's a homegrown talent and one of the faces of the franchise. He leads New York with 19 home runs this season while adding 51 RBI and hitting .239.

After improving to 51-48 with a 6-4 win over the Miami Marlins on Monday, the Mets hold a half-game lead for the third and final wild-card spot in the National League. New York had a tough start to the season before turning things around to put itself in playoff contention, so the franchise could look to add reinforcements at the trade deadline that would boost its chances of returning to the postseason after falling short in 2023.

Sammon noted that "the general consensus around the league is that the Mets are looking for ways to improve without sacrificing much of their future." New York could look to bolster its bullpen or add depth pieces to improve its bench, but it doesn't sound like any major moves are on the horizon unless the team receives an offer it can't refuse.

The Mets will begin a two-game Subway Series against the New York Yankees on Tuesday.
