MLB Trade Rumors: Mets, Padres Among Teams Expected to Be Buyers at 2024 Deadline

Andrew PetersJul 21, 2024

The New York Mets and San Diego Padres are among the teams reportedly expected to be buyers at the 2024 trade deadline, per MLB.com's Mark Feinsand.

Feinsand also noted that the Minnesota Twins are also expected to be buyers while the Tampa Bay Rays will be both buyers and sellers at the deadline.

Feinsand reported that one front office executive said the trade market will "heat up big time this week," ahead of the July 30 deadline.

The Mets are looking to bolster their roster at the deadline as they hope to have a deep postseason run. New York is currently in third place in the NL East at 50-48 and while it is still well within reach of making the playoffs, it would likely need to add some talent to have any hopes of making a run at the World Series.

The Padres find themselves in a similar position in third place in the NL West at 52-50. San Diego added some talent in the trade market already this season, adding two-time batting champion Luis Arraez in a trade with the Miami Marlins, but it will look to add to the offense further before the end of the year.

The Twins are among teams trying to boost their chances of making a postseason run, sitting in second place in the AL Central at 54-44. Minnesota is reportedly eyeing a rental starting pitcher at the deadline, and that could be what it needs to emerge as a threat in the postseason.

The Rays, who are in fourth place in the AL East at 50-49 and could reportedly wind up being both a buyer and a seller at the deadline. That approach could allow them to add some future pieces to prepare for next season.
