Mets' Luis Severino Shades Former Yankees Teammates: 'You Only Have 2 Good Hitters'

Zach BacharJul 19, 2024

New York Mets starting pitcher Luis Severino took some shots at his former New York Yankees teammates on Friday.

Severino revealed that he's in a group chat with members of the Yankees, who playfully told him that he was "afraid of them" due to his expected absence in the upcoming Subway Series on Tuesday.

"I'm not afraid of you guys," Severino responded to them.

He added, presumably referring to Aaron Judge and Juan Soto: "Right now, you only have two good hitters."

The 30-year-old spent the first nine years of his career with the Yankees before he joined the Mets on a one-year, $13 million contract following his 2023 campaign. He's accumulated a 6-3 record during his first season in Queens, posting a 3.78 ERA and recording 81 strikeouts in 109.2 innings of work.

While Severino was likely exchanging some friendly trash talk with his former teammates, the Yankees' lineup has struggled to stay consistent whenever Judge and Soto aren't at the plate. Outside of the two All-Stars, no other player on the team owns a batting average over .250.

Giancarlo Stanton is the only Yankee other than Soto and Judge to record more than 10 homers in 2024, and he's been on the injured list since June 23 due to a left hamstring strain.

While manager Aaron Boone's team still owns a commendable 58-40 overall record, the Bronx Bombers have gone just 8-18 over their past 26 games.
