Bill O'Brien Penn State: Lack of Head Coaching Experience Will Doom Tenure

Nicholas GossJan 6, 2012

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien will be the next head coach of Penn State football, according to Chris Mortensen of ESPN, and his lack of head coaching experience will doom his tenure in State College.

O'Brien is not ready to be a head coach at any level, and he won't be able to convince recruits that he's the right man to lead the program into the future.

Penn State needed someone with a big name that recruits would recognize, and a coach that can talk about his past accomplishments.

There is no way that O'Brien can step into Penn State, which seemed to be the job that no one wanted to go near, and be successful under the intense pressure and expectations that come with Nittany Lions football.

Not only does he have no prior head coaching experience, O'Brien doesn't do an exceptional job at the position he has now.

The reason the Patriots offense is so good is because of quarterback Tom Brady, not because of O'Brien. Brady has been in the same offense for years, and several of his offensive linemen and receivers have been with him well before O'Brien arrived in Foxboro.

Out of the four previous Bill Belichick coordinators that have become head coaches, all of them have failed miserably. They include Charlie Weis, Romeo Crennel, Josh McDaniels and Eric Mangini.

O'Brien is worse than all four of those coaches. He doesn't have previous success to fall back on as a head coach when trying to pitch Penn State to recruits, and he won't be able to handle all the off-the-field drama surrounding the program while at the same time performing well on the field.

This is a disastrous hire for Penn State that will bring the football program down even further.
