Video: Bronny James' Draft-Night Phone Call with Lakers' JJ Redick, Pelinka Revealed
The Los Angeles Lakers released video of general manager Rob Pelinka's draft-night phone call to Bronny James, telling him that he would be heading to L.A. as the No. 55 overall pick in the NBA draft, joining his father, Lakers superstar LeBron James.
Pelinka raved to James about his work ethic and character as reasons for the choice before revealing that he would be the pick. He then gave the phone to new Lakers head coach JJ Redick, who notably told James that he couldn't wait to coach him.
James was obviously elated to land with the Lakers, and the same goes for his family and friends.
LeBron James was notably hyped as well.
A father and son have never been active in the NBA at the same time, let alone on the same team. That has happened in other sports, most notably in baseball when Ken Griffey Sr. and Jr. played on the Seattle Mariners in 1990 and 1991. Gordie Howe also played with his sons Mark and Marty on the 1979-80 Hartford Whalers.
The younger James is on a developmental track in L.A., so it doesn't seem likely for him to start with the Lakers right away. But his time will come, and the moment when he and his father share the court will be must-see TV.
