Video: Lakers' Pelinka Explains Drafting Bronny amid LeBron James' Contract Decision

As the Los Angeles Lakers await a decision from LeBron James about his future with the organization going into free agency, general manager Rob Pelinka addressed the team's decision to select Bronny James with the No. 55 overall pick in the 2024 NBA draft.

Pelinka began his press conference by talking about the "magical" possibility of having a father and son share the court in an NBA game for the first time ever.

While the opportunity to potentially create a historic moment makes for a nice story, Pelinka made sure to point out the Lakers believe in James' talent and character as he embarks on his NBA career:

"Bronny is, first and foremost, a person of high character. And second, he is a young man that works incredibly hard. Those are the qualities we look for in drafting players and adding to our developmental corps at the Lakers. ... Coach Redick and I were able to welcome him to the Lakers family and let him know that this moment was happening mostly because of the work he's put into the game and because of the character young man that he is. That was what was expressed to him on the phone call."

The next step in the process will be putting together a development plan that will allow James to become a contributor to the Lakers early in his career. He will most likely take part in Summer League, which begins on July 6.

Los Angeles plays the Sacramento Kings in the first game of the Summer League season. There will almost certainly be clarity on his father's future by that point.

LeBron has a $51.4 million player option for next season that must be decided on by Saturday. If he opts out of that deal, free agents are allowed to start negotiating with teams at 6 p.m. ET on Sunday.
