Red Sox's Updated Trade Targets with 2024 MLB Deadline Approaching

The Boston Red Sox are currently toeing the line between buyer and seller, and as long as they can stay within striking distance of a playoff berth, they will likely be looking to make at least a small-scale addition or two before the deadline.

Upgrading their middle infield situation figures to be a top priority, as an injury to shortstop Trevor Story and a dreadful first year in Boston by Vaughn Grissom has left them with two major question marks up the middle.

Tip of the cap to David Hamilton for the job he's done stepping into the shortstop job, but there is still a clear need for up-the-middle infield talent if this team is going to make a playoff push.

Ahead we've highlighted three potential targets, all of which should come at a relatively low acquisition cost.

SS Nick Ahmed, San Francisco Giants

Nick Ahmed racked up 12.2 WAR over 10 seasons with the Arizona Diamondbacks, including 4-WAR seasons in 2018 and 2019 when he won back-to-back NL Gold Glove Awards at shortstop.

The 34-year-old was cut loose following the emergence of Geraldo Perdomo last season, and he played his way onto the San Francisco Giants Opening Day roster after signing a minor league deal.

He is hitting just .250/.291/.323 over 136 plate appearances, but he has an .869 OPS against left-handed pitching and is a solid defensive option up the middle. If the Giants decide to sell, he could be a nice low-cost pickup to provide middle infield depth.

2B Brendan Rodgers, Colorado Rockies

Injuries have kept Brendan Rogers from fully realizing the potential that made him the No. 3 overall pick in the 2015 draft, but he has shown flashes along the way, including a 4.3-WAR season in 2022 when he won NL Gold Glove honors at second base.

The 27-year-old is still a year removed from free agency and could plug the hole at second base while top prospects Nick Yorke and Marcelo Mayer continue to develop.

Rodgers is hitting .284/.318/.406 with 14 doubles, four home runs and 26 RBI in 242 plate appearances, and he has picked it up of late with a .378/.385/.676 line over 39 trips to the plate in June.

SS Paul DeJong, Chicago White Sox

Paul DeJong has quietly been one of the better bargain signings of the offseason, inking a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Chicago White Sox after posting a 66 OPS+ over 400 plate appearances.

An All-Star back in 2019 when he slugged 30 home runs and racked up 5.3 WAR for the St. Louis Cardinals, he has quietly been a solid offensive option at shortstop.

The 30-year-old has a 105 OPS+ with 12 doubles, 14 home runs and 30 RBI in 75 games, and even as a bench option he could be a useful addition for the stretch run.
