Yankees Trade for Infielder J.D. Davis, Cash; Athletics Receive Jordan Groshans

After being designated for assignment by the Oakland Athletics last week, veteran first baseman J.D. Davis has found a new home.

The New York Yankees announced on Sunday that they acquired Davis and cash considerations in a trade with the A's in exchange for infielder Jordan Groshans.

Davis appeared in 39 games for the A's and hit .236, his lowest average since the 2018 season, which was his second year in the majors. He also had four home runs and five RBI. He missed some time due to an adductor strain.

It was just a year ago that Davis hit 18 homers and had 69 RBI for the San Francisco Giants, so the Yankees are certainly hoping he will be able to regain that form. New York needed to add some depth after veteran slugger Giancarlo Stanton was placed on the 10-day injured list on Sunday due to a left hamstring strain. The team has also been without first baseman Anthony Rizzo, who suffered a fractured forearm earlier this month.

At 52-27, the Yankees have the best record in the majors. They are looking to earn a series win over the Atlanta Braves in Sunday's rubber game. While losing Stanton is a blow to their lineup, they still have a talented group led by MVP candidates Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, so they should be able to mitigate his loss.

The Yankees are chasing their first World Series appearance since they last won a title in 2009, so Davis will be a key depth piece as they try to accomplish their goal.
