Yankees, LHP Tim Hill Agree to 1-Year Contract After White Sox Exit

After his stint with the Chicago White Sox came to an end last week, veteran relief pitcher Tim Hill has landed with a World Series contender.

Hill reached an agreement on a one-year deal with the New York Yankees on Thursday.

ESPN's Jeff Passan first reported the deal,

Hill went from a White Sox team that is last in the AL Central with an MLB-worst 20-55 record to the Yankees, who have the best record in baseball at 51-25.

Chicago released Hill last week but is still on the hook for the remainder of his $1.8 million salary for the 2024 season, so signing him was a bargain for New York.

The Yankees needed to fortify their bullpen in the wake of injuries to relievers Scott Effross (back), Ian Hamilton (COVID-19) and JT Brubaker (elbow). Jonathan Loaisiga was also lost for the season due to Tommy John surgery earlier this year. Jon Heyman of the New York Post noted that Effross and Brubaker are set to begin rehab assignments, so "more enforcements are on the way."

Hill made 27 appearances for the White Sox this season and struggled with a 5.87 ERA and a 2.22 WHIP. New York is certainly hoping that the change in scenery can help him improve. His sidearm delivery makes him a tricky pitcher to figure out, and he will be the team's third left-handed reliever next to Caleb Ferguson and Victor Gonzalez.

The Yankees are attempting to make the World Series for the first time since they last won a title in 2009, so adding Hill is another step toward that goal.
