Knockout Group Favorites
Germany and Switzerland remain the heavy favorites to advance out of Group A after convincing opening wins. It will be tough for either Hungary (-2) or Scotland (-4) to garner one of the four third-place berths after getting a poor start on goal differential.
Group B is absolutely loaded, but Spain seem extremely likely go through after waxing Croatia, 3-0. This is a group that easily could get three teams though, with Albania a potential punching bag for both Spain and Croatia, though the country acquitted itself well in a 1-0 loss to Italy. Don't be shocked if Croatia bounces back and does just enough to slide into the knockout phase as a third-place finisher.
Group C is wide open, with only England looking like a clear favorite to sneak through after Jude Bellingham's headed goal gave them the 1-0 win. Serbia tested them on Sunday, no doubt, while both Denmark and Slovenia started with a point. If any of those two teams steal points against England it will go a long way toward getting them through to the knockout phase. Look for England, Denmark and Serbia to move on.
France and Netherlands are the prohibitive favorites in Group D and should monopolize the points. Austria or Poland will need to get all three points in their matchup for either to have a shot at the third-place matchup, but it isn't looking great for either.
In Group E, Belgium stands out as the favorite, though chaos should follow behind them. This is another group that could get three teams through, with a relative toss-up between Ukraine, Slovakia and Romania. Look for the first two to reach the knockout phase.
Finally, Group F is all about Portugal, the prohibitive favorites to move on. But Turkey and Czech Republic are no slouches and should join them in the knockout phase.
Granted, the Euros will have plenty of twists and turns to come. Expect mayhem at Europe's premier continental tournament.
