Keith Smart Agrees to Two-Year Deal with Sacramento Kings

Josh MartinJun 7, 2018

The revolving door to the Sacramento Kings' coaching office is spinning faster than ever, with Paul Westphal still packing his boxes while Keith Smart makes room for his.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, Smart has already agreed to a two-year deal with the Kings, just hours after the team announced Westphal's firing.

This will be Smart's third stint as a head coach in the NBA after unsuccessful runs with the Cleveland Cavaliers and the Golden State Warriors. Smart sports a career record of 45-77. Even that would be considered an improvement over Westphal, who managed just 51 wins against 120 losses in just over three seasons in Sacramento.

The coaching change comes on the heels of a tumultuous week that saw second-year star DeMarcus Cousins demand a trade out of Sacramento amidst yet another row with Westphal. The two had endured a rather testy player-coach relationship since Cousins joined the Kings as the fifth overall pick in the 2010 NBA Draft.

Only time will tell if Smart, an Indiana grad, can get Cousins, a Kentucky alum, to overlook their collegiate rivalry and play to his potential. Smart is best known for hitting the shot that gave IU the victory over Syracuse in the 1987 NCAA Tournament Championship Game.

Smart will be tasked with turning around a franchise that's struggled through poor personnel decisions and even worse ownership since the glory days of Chris Webber, Peja Stojakovic, Mike Bibby and Vlade Divac. The Maloof brothers, who own the Kings, have threatened to move the team out of Sacramento in recent years without a new arena, nearly succeeding with a quick transfer to Anaheim last season.
