US Open 2024 Odds: Predictions for Scottie Scheffler and Top Contenders

Joe TanseyJun 11, 2024

Scottie Scheffler is the lowest US Open betting favorite in over a decade.

The +300 number attached to Scheffler is one comparable to the odds Tiger Woods received in his prime.

It's hard to argue against Scheffler's favorite status at the moment because has not finished outside the top 10 since January on the PGA Tour.

Scheffler will face challenges from the other top golfers in the field and from the Pinehurst course itself.

Three players have finished under par in the last two US Opens held at Pinehurst in 2005 and 2014.

The tough conditions could suit someone like PGA champion Xander Schauffele, who has an excellent track record at the US Open.

The results have been more mixed for Rory McIlroy, who despite two finishes outside the top 10 at majors in 2024, is the third favorite behind Scheffler and Schauffele.

We're running out of superlatives to describe Scheffler's season.

He produced 11 consecutive top-10 finishes and comes into Pinehurst off his fifth victory of the season.

The even more remarkable part about his run is that he landed inside the top five in seven of his last eight starts. The lone exception was a tie for eighth at the PGA Championship.

Scheffler is understandably a massive favorite to win at Pinehurst, and it feels like only Scheffler will beat himself in his attempt to win a second major in 2024.

Scheffler's performed well in the past on tough US Open courses. He finished in the top three in the last two years and inside the top seven in the last three US Opens.

A top-10 finish is the bare minimum expectation for Scheffler right now. You could make the argument that a top-five placing is the baseline he should reach in his current form.

Prediction: Top Five Finish

Xander Schauffele (+1000)

Xander Schauffele has been one of the most consistent US Open golfers since he broke into the field in 2017.

Schauffele has not finished worse than 14th in any of his US Open appearances. He has six top-10 finishes in seven starts.

If he did not win the PGA Championship, a strong case could be made for Schauffele to win his first major at Pinehurst because of his US Open form.

Now, you could argue that the US Open results and his win at Valhalla are the reasons for him to be Scheffler's biggest competitor at Pinehurst.

Schauffele owns six top-10 finishes in last eight starts, including an eighth-place mark at The Masters.

If Scheffler wasn't in otherworldly form, we'd be talking more about Schauffele's incredible run. That makes a top-10 finish the bare minimum expectation for him as well.

Prediction: Top 10 Finish

Rory McIlroy (+1100)

Rory McIlroy's major tournament results have been more difficult to predict than those of Scheffler and Schauffele.

McIlroy's tie for 22nd at the Masters and tie for 12th at the PGA Championship are not bad results, but in comparison to the season's two major winners, they do not put him close to ending the 10-year major drought.

The US Open has been McIlroy's best major over the last five years. He finished in the top 10 in each of those starts.

McIlroy took second behind Wyndham Clark last year in Los Angeles. He has three second-place major placings since his last major triumph in 2014.

He comes into Pinehurst with four straight top-15 finishes on the PGA Tour, which is not bad for any golfer, but in comparison to Scheffler, it needs to be a bit better.

McIlroy's recent US Open performance suggests he will at least be in the mix come Sunday, but whether he can reach Scheffler's level remains to be seen.

Prediction: Top 10 Finish
