The FBI publicly released 475 pages of documents pertaining to late NFL running back O.J. Simpson on Friday.

According to ESPN's Michael Rothstein, the bulk of the documents are in relation to the 1994 case that resulted in Simpson getting charged with the murder of his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman.

In a controversial decision, Simpson was acquitted of their murders in October 1995, but he later lost a civil lawsuit, as he was found liable in the deaths of Brown Simpson and Goldman, and ordered to pay $33.5 million in damages to their families.

While Simpson avoided jail time with regard to the murders of Brown Simpson and Goldman, he was found guilty on 12 charges stemming from a 2007 robbery in Las Vegas and spent nine years in prison as a result.

Simpson died from cancer in April at the age of 76. It is standard practice for the FBI to release documents concerning individuals following their death.

Simpson first achieved fame as a running back, first collegiately at USC, and then with the Buffalo Bills and San Francisco 49ers in the NFL.

During his 11-year NFL career, Simpson rushed for 11,236 yards and 61 touchdowns and also had 203 receptions for 2,142 yards and 14 scores.

Simpson was a six-time Pro Bowler and five-time first-team All-Pro, and he had one of the best seasons by a running back in NFL history in 1973, becoming the first NFL player to rush for over 2,000 yards in a single season en route to being named NFL MVP.

He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1985, and he is also a College Football Hall of Famer after winning the Heisman Trophy at USC in 1968.
