Cowboys Rumors: Dak Prescott Immediately Called CeeDee Lamb After Jefferson Contract

Adam WellsJun 6, 2024

As CeeDee Lamb continues to holdout while waiting for a contract extension from the Dallas Cowboys, Dak Prescott got in touch with his star receiver after Justin Jefferson's deal with the Minnesota Vikings was done.

Per ESPN's Todd Archer, Prescott called Lamb "immediately" after news of Jefferson's contract was made public.

"CeeDee's handling business," Prescott said. "Nobody's more in his corner than I am, understanding that that's his chess move, and he's got to do that. So I know him, I know he's been working. As I said, I've thrown with him. He's just fine."

Lamb is skipping mandatory minicamp this week, leaving him subject to more than $100,000 in fines.

Prescott is also seeking a new deal from the Cowboys, but he has been present at minicamp this week.

Jefferson signed a four-year, $140 million extension with the Vikings that includes $110 million guaranteed on June 3. The deal made him the highest-paid non-quarterback in NFL history.

That contract will likely have an impact on the type of deal Lamb expects to get from the Cowboys. He is entering the final season of his rookie contract that will pay him $17.99 million.

The Jefferson deal is also the third given to a wide receiver this offseason that averages at least $30 million per season. A.J. Brown (three years, $96 million) and Amon-Ra St. Brown (four years, $120 million) are the others.

Lamb can make an argument that he should be paid close to the same level as Jefferson. They both entered the NFL in 2020 when Lamb was the No. 17 overall pick and Jefferson came off the board at No. 22.

Jefferson set the NFL record for most receiving yards by a player in his first four seasons (5,899), but Lamb ranks fourth on that list (5,145). Lamb's 392 receptions and 32 touchdown catches are more than Jefferson (390 receptions, 30 touchdown catches).

The Cowboys' decision to slow-play things with Lamb could ultimately cost them more if they are able to get an extension done.

If the Cowboys continue to drag this process out, they will have to worry about the possibility that Lamb holds out during training camp and the preseason.
