Bryce Young: New HC Canales 'Really Good for Me' After Struggles Under Frank Reich
Carolina Panthers quarterback Bryce Young has been impressed with new head coach Dave Canales after a tumultuous rookie season.
"Really, it's the consistency he has," Young said, per ESPN's David Newton. "He has a very calming presence. He's someone you can have a conversation with, talk with. Good, bad or indifferent, you can tell there's an emphasis on teaching. At times, of course, we're passionate. With coaches there's a lot of yelling, a lot of emotion."
After the Panthers wrapped up a dismal 2023 campaign that included the mid-season firing of former coach Frank Reich as well as a 2-15 record, the team hired Canales on Jan. 25.

Rookie WRs Who Will Outplay Their Draft Value 📈
Young already appears to be comfortable under the former Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator, highlighting the open communication that he has with Canales.
"His style is very [positive]," Young said, via Newton. "He wants to make sure he communicates. It's not just, 'Oh, that's a bad throw' or 'You missed.' It's constructive. If you miss something or do something wrong, it gives you something tangible to, 'Hey, let's get our base in order.' It's something you can think about and apply. It's been really good for me."
The former Alabama standout could be in line for a sophomore season without as much turmoil, as Newton reported that Young's rookie season was "difficult" because Reich and former offensive coordinator Thomas Brown "had different philosophies."
The 22-year-old didn't exceed expectations in his first year, completing 59.8 percent of his throws for 2,877 yards and 11 touchdowns compared to 10 interceptions. However, he was sacked 62 times and dealt with a major coaching change just 10 games into his NFL career.
With a new coaching staff that seems to be on the same page, Young could put his rough rookie season in the rearview mirror and show why he was the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 draft.
