Lions' Updated Salary Cap After Jared Goff's Rumored $212M Contract Extension

Andrew PetersMay 13, 2024

The Detroit Lions are giving quarterback Jared Goff a lofty extension after he led them to the NFC championship game in 2023.

The Lions are reportedly signing Goff to a four-year, $212 million contract extension, ESPN's Adam Schefter reported Monday.

According to Schefter, the deal includes $170 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid Lions player in franchise history.

Before the new deal with Goff, the Lions had a team salary cap of $257.166 million, per Over The Cap but with an added $53 million annual salary to give to Goff, that number will be around $279.84 million.

Detroit had $26.008 million in available cap space before the deal and is now left over with $5.308 million.

Goff's extension comes after one of the best seasons of his career. In 2023, the former No. 1 overall pick had 4,575 passing yards and 30 touchdowns—the second most of his career. He led Detroit to its first NFC championship game since 1991 and gave fans hope that there is plenty more success to come.

Part of his success was due to having an outstanding target in Amon-Ra St. Brown, who had career-highs with 1,515 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns last year. The Lions rewarded St. Brown with a four-year, $120 million deal earlier this offseason, making him the highest-paid receiver in the league.

Goff's $53 million average annual salary makes him the second highest-paid quarterback in the NFL, just behind Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow, who makes $55 million per year.

Goff, 29, was set to become a free agent in 2025, but will remain with Detroit for the foreseeable future after his extension.

The Lions have had a resurgence thanks to Goff, St. Brown and other key players, and they're looking to continue blossoming in 2024. Last year, Detroit reached the playoffs for the first time since 2016 and advanced past the wild-card round for the first time since 1991 when they reached the NFC Championship.

The 2023 season also saw the Lions claim the NFC North title for the first time in 30 years.

But Detroit is still seeking its first Super Bowl appearance and it seems to have the right group to finally achieve that goal. The Lions fell just short last season, losing to the San Francisco 49ers 34-31, but returning most of their key players from a year ago sets up for another big year in Detroit.
