NFL Scout: Caleb Williams, 2024 QB Draft Class 'Will Stand the Test of Time'
An anonymous NFC scout believes in the longevity of the quarterbacks selected in the 2024 NFL draft.
"This was a good quarterback class that I think will stand the test of time -- that's a big part of all this," the veteran scout told ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "Teams had to jump on them early."
Six quarterbacks were selected with the first 12 picks of the draft, including each of the first three choices. The Chicago Bears added USC's Caleb Williams at No. 1, the Washington Commanders chose former LSU passer Jayden Daniels with the No. 2 pick, and the New England Patriots used the No. 3 choice to draft North Carolina's Drake Maye.
Williams was well-known ahead of his senior season, winning the 2022 Heisman Trophy with the Trojans. While USC finished with a relatively disappointing 8-5 overall record in 2023, the 22-year-old still completed 68.6 percent of his throws for 3,633 yards to go along with 30 touchdowns and five interceptions.
Also in the opening round, Washington signal-caller Michael Penix Jr. was selected by the Atlanta Falcons at No. 8 while Michigan's J.J. McCarthy went to Minnesota with the No. 10 choice after the Vikings traded up for him. Two picks later, the Denver Broncos selected Oregon quarterback Bo Nix.
The 2024 draft represented the first time that six quarterbacks were chosen in the first round since 1983 (h/t ESPN).
However, the next signal-caller after Nix wasn't selected until South Carolina's Spencer Rattler went to the New Orleans Saints with the No. 150 pick on Day 3. Still, it's clear that at least one scout is a fan of the 2024 quarterback class as a whole.
