NFL Exec: Falcons Picking Michael Penix Jr. 'Turned the Draft on Its Head'
The Atlanta Falcons' decision to select former Washington quarterback Michael Penix Jr. with the No. 8 pick in the 2024 NFL draft was a surprise to many, including members of opposing NFL front offices.
"The Penix move turned the draft on its head," an anonymous front office member said, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. "The room perked up after that selection."
While the 23-year-old was coming off a tremendous season with the Huskies, the Falcons' 2024 quarterback room was seemingly set before the draft started. Atlanta signed former Minnesota Vikings signal-caller Kirk Cousins to a massive four-year deal worth $180 million in free agency, which included a $50 million signing bonus and $100 million guaranteed (via Spotrac).
Penix was viewed as a quarterback that could contribute quickly ahead of the draft, as he completed 65.4 percent of his throws for 4,903 yards and 36 touchdowns during his senior campaign at Washington. However, he'll spend his rookie season behind Cousins on Minnesota's depth chart.
While the front official official was surprised by the pick, they understood the logic behind the selection.
"But it only takes one team, and if you're comfortable with the injury history, his performance last year was worthy of a high pick," the official said, per Fowler. "He's a great thrower of the football. And it's hard to knock them for loading up on the game's most important position."
Although many were perplexed by Atlanta's first-round decision, it appears as though there are fans of the choice in opposing front offices.
