NFL Rumors: Coaches Say Jayden Daniels, Not Drake Maye, Should Be Commanders' Pick

Tyler ConwayApr 11, 2024

Draft pundits may be split on Jayden Daniels and Drake Maye as the QB2 in the 2024 NFL draft, but it does not appear that NFL coaches feel the same way.

John Keim of ESPN reported coaches have overwhelmingly said the Washington Commanders should take Daniels with the No. 2 pick in this month's draft. By contrast, none of the coaches said Maye should be taken ahead of Daniels.

The Chicago Bears are seen as a mortal lock to take Caleb Williams with the No. 1 pick, leaving the Commanders a choice between Daniels, Maye and J.J. McCarthy, who has received increasing buzz since the end of the college football season.

B/R's Scouting Department would heavily favor Maye in this scenario. Maye is ranked as the No. 3 overall prospect and is QB1 on the board, one spot ahead of Williams. Daniels is ranked as the No. 31 overall prospect, and McCarthy comes in at No. 33.

Meanwhile, ESPN's Mel Kiper has Daniels ranked second overall on his big board, behind only Williams.

The contrast of opinions in the Maye vs. Drake debate make this an even more critical decision. If both quarterbacks turn into stars, we're unlikely to see much fretting. That said, if one turns into a star while the other folds, there will be a lot of people patting themselves on the back in the coming years.

We're already seeing Carolina Panthers faithful having FOMO after their team passed on C.J. Stroud in favor of Bryce Young. The Commanders, who have a new ownership group and front office, are desperate to get their new era off on the right foot. It will start with getting the No. 2 pick right.
