QB Coach: Caleb Williams Is Like Patrick Mahomes, Has '1st Percentile' Arm Strength

Doric SamApr 9, 2024

USC star quarterback Caleb Williams has long been considered the top prospect in the 2024 NFL draft class, and some scouts believe he's in rare air when it comes to certain traits.

A private quarterbacks coach told The Athletic's Ted Nguyen that Williams' arm strength is unmatched and his ability to thrive in chaos is comparable to two-time NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes.

"Regarding NFL readiness, no prospect has a foundation for throwing and movement efficiency like Caleb," the coach said. "Although his arm strength is the first percentile, he can throttle and adapt his throw at a similar level to (Patrick) Mahomes."

Williams has "special" mechanics, Nguyen noted, which fuel the belief that he's a generational prospect.

"You'll see guys like Caleb and Mahomes; they have crazy external rotation," another coach said. "So what I mean by that is when they start their throw motion from the horizontal L. When they get to this vertical point and start going forward, their arm is able to go so far past 90 degrees that it allows them to change arm angles with their spine angle. If you notice, C.J. Stroud, who's a great thrower of course, doesn't have that same external rotation."

All signs point to Williams being selected by the Chicago Bears with the No. 1 overall pick when the NFL draft commences on April 25.
