Video: Brian Kelly Hints Jayden Daniels Will Be Drafted by Commanders at LSU Pro Day

Andrew PetersMar 28, 2024

During an interview during quarterback Jayden Daniels' pro day on Wednesday, LSU head coach Brian Kelly hinted where his Heisman Trophy winner will land in this year's draft.

"He's going to be so committed to taking care of himself that you're not going to have to worry about size or he doesn't weigh enough," Kelly said. "Lamar's (Jackson) done a pretty good job with his size. (Patrick) Mahomes, I wouldn't consider him a giant. He's gonna get the ball out to his playmakers and make plays for Washington."

The Washington Commanders have the second pick in the 2024 NFL draft, and Kelly seems to believe Daniels will be selected with that pick.

Daniels certainly made a strong case to be one of the top quarterbacks off the board this year, throwing for 3,812 passing yards, 40 touchdowns and just four interceptions in 2023. He also picked up 1,134 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on the ground.

Bleacher Report's Scouting Department considers Daniels to be the No. 29 player and the No. 3 quarterback prospect in this year's draft class, just behind North Carolina's Drake Maye and USC's Caleb Williams.

In the latest mock draft, Daniels is off the board early, going to the New England Patriots with the third pick behind Williams at No. 1 to the Chicago Bears and Maye at No. 2 to the Commanders.

The Commanders seem poised to select a quarterback with their first pick after a 4-13 season in 2023. Washington recently traded last year's starter, Sam Howell, to the Seattle Seahawks after he had 3,946 passing yards, 21 touchdowns and 21 interceptions, perhaps to make room for a new man under center.

Washington is entering a new era under head coach Dan Quinn, who spent the last three years as the Dallas Cowboys' defensive coordinator. If the Commanders can find Quinn a franchise quarterback, it could lead to a quick turnaround in Washington after the team missed the playoffs the last three seasons.

Who the Commanders will select is still to be determined, but Kelly's comments indicate it could be Daniels.
