Bayley and the Underdogs with Best Shot at WWE WrestleMania 40 Win
WrestleMania 40 is right around the corner, so everything WWE is doing is in preparation for its biggest show of the year.
As of now, 10 matches have been booked to take place across April 6 and 7 at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
Here's a look at the current lineup:
- Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes (Undisputed WWE Universal Championship)
- The Rock and Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes and Seth Rollins
- Roman Reigns vs. Cody Rhodes (Undisputed WWE Universal Championship)
- Seth Rollins vs. Drew McIntyre (World Heavyweight Championship)
- Iyo Sky vs. Bayley (WWE Women's Championship)
- Rhea Ripley vs. Becky Lynch (Women's World Championship)
- Gunther vs. Sami Zayn (Intercontinental Championship)
- LA Knight vs. AJ Styles
- Jey Uso vs. Jimmy Uso
- Logan Paul vs. Randy Orton vs. Kevin Owens (United States Championship)
- The Judgment Day vs. DIY vs. Awesome Truth vs. The New Day vs. TBD (Undisputed WWE Tag Team Championship)
We all know wrestling results are pre-determined, but part of the fun is following the story and rooting for someone who is positioned as an underdog to overcome their rival.
Even if some results seem obvious, the story may still depict the eventual winner as fighting an uphill battle.
With that in mind, let's look at some underdogs who have a good chance of leaving WrestleMania 40 with a victory.
Awesome Truth
1 of 4Rhea Ripley has been on fire as the leader of The Judgment Day for the better part of a year, but there was a period when the group began feeling a bit stagnant.
This is when R-Truth entered the picture.
The chemistry between Truth and every member of the group was an instant hit with fans and breathed new energy into each segment.
Eventually, the stable tried to discard the 52-year-old, but he has found new allies in Johnny Gargano and Tommaso Ciampa, plus an old friend in The Miz.
Together with The A-Lister, Truth will challenge for the tag titles in a multi-team ladder match at 'Mania, and there would be no better payoff to this story than seeing the two of them walk out of Philadelphia as the new champions.
Not only is Truth an underdog in this situation due to Finn Bálor and Damian Priest holding a grudge, but he and The Miz will also have to defeat five teams to win.
It would be one of the most satisfying moments of the weekend if Awesome Truth gets the victory.
Sami Zayn
2 of 4For over 650 days, Gunther has dominated the roster as the intercontinental champion. The number of defeats he has suffered on the main roster can be counted on one hand, but he may be about to add one more.
Ending the longest-ever IC title reign at WrestleMania would give WWE a highlight-reel moment, but having Sami Zayn defeat The Ring General is why it will be special.
The former intercontinental champion has been one of WWE's most beloved talents for the past couple of years thanks to his involvement with the Bloodline storyline and his overall popularity as a skilled performer.
He had a great 'Mania moment last year in a tag match with Owens against The Usos, but he deserves a solo title win.
Zayn wasn't able to overcome Reigns at Elimination Chamber in February 2023, but beating Gunther would be almost as big of an upset due to The Ring General's dominant reign as IC champion.
This match will be a lot of fun regardless, but if The Underdog from the Underground leaves Philly with a new belt, fans are going to give him one of the biggest pops of the entire weekend.
Bayley
3 of 4Bayley isn't going into WrestleMania as an underdog because Iyo Sky has any kind of significant physical advantage over her. This is all about numbers.
After being ousted from Damage CTRL, Bayley now finds herself having to worry about more than just one opponent.
Asuka, Dakota Kai and Kairi Sane won't be far away when The Genius of the Sky defends the WWE Women's Championship, so The Role Model is going to need to keep her eyes open for any interference while also contending with one of the best high-flyers in the company.
Bayley may have earned this title shot by winning the women's Royal Rumble match, but her contest with Sky will be just as personal as anything else on the card.
It's been too long since the former Hugger had a belt around her waist. Now is the time.
Cody Rhodes
4 of 4Many of us thought Cody Rhodes would dethrone Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39, but we were all wrong. Not only did The Tribal Chief retain the undisputed WWE universal title, but he has also become more powerful than ever.
With The Rock now serving as a member of the board of TKO and The Bloodline, Reigns is protected in every way imaginable, which is why The American Nightmare's eventual win will be that much sweeter.
Not only will Rhodes have to wrestle in a tag team match on Night 1 WrestleMania, but he is also going to need to keep an eye out for Rocky, Solo Sikoa and Jimmy Uso during the bout.
WWE has done everything possible to make it seem like the 38-year-old has no chance of leaving with the belt. Reigns has every advantage at his disposal, so if Rhodes can defeat him and end the longest title run in decades, it's going to create one of the best 'Mania moments of all time.
Bayley, Truth, The Miz, Zayn and Rhodes all have the odds stacked against them, but each has the potential to create a babyface title win that will be remembered for years to come.
