Most Recent Additions
2 of 3The United States Championship will be on the line in Philadelphia when social media megastar Logan Paul defends his title against Kevin Owens and Randy Orton in a Triple Threat Match, as revealed by SmackDown general manager Nick Aldis last Friday night.
It is a match built since January when Paul narrowly escaped the Royal Rumble with his title reign intact after Owens was caught with a pair of brass knuckles on his hand and disqualified in their championship clash.
A month later at the Elimination Chamber, Paul used those same brass knuckles to lay out Orton and cost him a shot at the World Heavyweight Championship, retaliation for the RKO that sent him packing from the event's namesake match.
The scenario puts Paul's title reign in great jeopardy and sets him up for a crowd-pleasing beatdown on wrestling's grandest stage. It also presents an opportunity for him to steal a victory by any means necessary as there are no disqualifications or count-outs in the popular three-way match.
Keep an eye out for those brass knuckles, too.
Also added to the card was a showdown between brothers Jey and Jimmy Uso, a match that has been in the making since the latter betrayed his sibling and cost him the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at last July's SummerSlam.
It is the third time in WrestleMania history that two siblings will clash on the grand stage.
The first came in 1994 when Owen Hart upset his brother, Bret, in a five-star classic to kick off the event's tenth edition. The second came 15 years later at WrestleMania 25 when Matt Hardy narrowly defeated his brother, Jeff, in an Extreme Rules Match.
AJ Styles has resented LA Knight since last September when he claims The Megastar "stepped over his body" to challenge Roman Reigns for the Undisputed WWE Universal Championship at Crown Jewel, a title shot The Phenomenal One believes was his.
Since then, each man has cost the other opportunities, most recently when Styles attacked Knight at the Elimination Chamber premium live event, leading to his defeat.
Their match may not be the most dynamic on paper but has been steadily built for seven months, making it one of the longest in the making on the card.
Finally, intercontinental champion Gunther will defend his title and historic reign against No. 1 contender Sami Zayn in a match that will compete for the best of show.
The Ring General is an oppressive heel champion, someone who can out-physical any opponent with his barrage of strikes and a devastating powerbomb that has won him many a match in the year-plus that he has held the IC title.
Zayn is the consummate babyface challenger, one of the great underdogs in WWE history. He already enjoyed one WrestleMania moment a year ago when he and Owens defeated The Usos to end their historic reign as tag team champions.
Now, he will look to end another by relieving the most dominant intercontinental champion in WWE history of his gold.
Predictions for Remaining Contests
3 of 3Last year's WrestleMania, an instant classic show with Match of the Year candidates strewn throughout its two-day runtime, featured a 12-match card.
A year earlier, the card featured 15 matches announced in advance.
Using those two shows as a barometer, it is safe to say this year's event will fall somewhere in that range. With 10 matches already announced, there is reason to believe that the company will add somewhere between two and five more matches.
Here are a few that one might expect to see:
The Pride vs. The Final Testament
The moment Karrion Kross reintroduced The Authors of Pain and Paul Ellering to the WWE Universe as part of The Final Testament, he made life a living hell for The Pride's Bobby Lashley and The Street Profits.
Sneak attacks, tainted victories, and vicious beatdowns have allowed the heel group to take a decided advantage over The All-Mighty, Angelo Dawkins, and Montez Ford. Even the addition of B-Fab to the babyface stable to counter the presence of Scarlett with Kross and Co. has not helped them gain the upper hand.
Since then, Kross has set out to tear The Pride apart from the inside, looking to manipulate the Street Profits and turn them against Lashley.
Whether he is successful or not remains to be seen but the feud appears to be on a path toward culminating at WrestleMania, perhaps in a big eight-person tag team brawl. A Philly Street Fight should not be out of the question and would serve as a suitable conclusion to the rivalry.
Elsewhere, Damage CTRL continued to be a dominant force in the women's division, thanks to strength in numbers. We saw Dakota Kai and the women's tag team champions, The Kabuki Warriors (Asuka and Kairi Sane), beat down Bayley and Naomi to close out SmackDown recently. As a result, the latter will be seeking revenge.
With Bayley busy with Iyo Sky and the WWE Women's Championship, Naomi is seemingly on an island.
Enter, Bianca Belair.
The EST has made it clear that she does not sympathize with Bayley after the living hell she put her through during Belair's wars with the group. Unless the plan is for the consummate babyface to turn heel, expect a change of heart that sees Belair join forces with Naomi to challenge for the tag team titles.
A report from Mike Johnson of PWInsider.com that Asuka may have suffered a significant knee injury may force Kai into action in her place.
Also potentially added to the card is the latest in the rivalry between a vengeful Rey Mysterio and the man who betrayed him, Santos Escobar. With the two slated to square off on Friday's SmackDown, do not be surprised if Mysterio partners with Zelina Vega to battle the leader of Legado del Fantasma and Elektra Lopez in a mixed tag match on the grand stage.
